In planning this series, I did a little research into what people were searching the internet for in regards to essential oils.
There were thousands of searches for “where to buy the best essential oils” and “100% pure essential oils.” Still more for “safe essential oil use” and “what is aromatherapy.”
However, I was surprised at the amount of people who just would search for “essential oil uses.”
There seems to be such a wonderful movement of people realizing the benefits to essential oil use, but a lack of education on how to properly use essential oils.
In the first three parts of The Wise Wife’s Essential Oils 101 series, I covered Safe Essential Oil Use, How to Diffuse Essential Oils, and Essential Oils on a Budget. Now let’s talk about other ways to use essential oils. In this post, I’ll cover the two main recommended methods of essential oil use and give you some great ideas on how to use essential oils.
Inhalation
Inhalation is as basic as it gets. It means simply inhaling the essential oil. There are two main ways to do this: direct inhalation and diffuser inhalation.
Direct Inhalation is inhaling undiluted essential oils from the bottle or aromatherapy inhaler. It’s recommended for only short-term use and should not be done by children or those with compromised immune systems or health conditions.
Diffuser Inhalation is using a diffuser to disperse essential oils throughout a room. This is my favorite method of inhalation because it makes the whole house smell wonderful and more than one person will benefit from the oils.

Topical Application
Topical application is an extremely versatile way to use essential oils. There are so many ways to topically apply oils to the body, but one thing is important: always follow safe dilution guidelines! I like this set of guidelines from Aromaweb.
I know some like to use essential oils “neat” or undiluted, but unless you are under the care of a certified aromatherapist, it is best to dilute essential oils. They are extremely potent, which means dilution is always best.
Once you know how to correctly dilute essential oils, you can use them in a variety of topical applications like:
Lotions
Salt scrubs
Sugar Scrubs
Massage Oils
Balms
Body Butters
Lip Balms
Always remember, there are so many DIY essential oil recipes on the internet. Create with caution as not everyone understands and follows safe essential oil dilution guidelines. You can always modify recipes by following safe dilution guidelines.
